Husky Energy is one of the world’s largest integrated energy companies responsible for production and refining of crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids, asphalt, petroleum, coke, and sulphur. To meet product demands, Husky Lima needed to increase feedstock, product, and market access flexibility in its refining segment.
To make this possible, IPS installed two large-fin cooling units to cool the kerosene; and completed painting, structural, and civil work. When finished, the project added to the long-term financial health and usefulness of the refinery – with an increased capacity capable of processing up to 40,000 barrels/day of heavy crude oil.
Safety was the most important aspect of this project. Due to the nature of the work and hazards associated with working in a refinery setting, IPS had to take extra precaution to prevent any sparks from occurring during construction. Other safety issues involved working on scaffolds with IPS personnel wearing heavy safety gear and completing a majority of the work outdoors in below-zero temperatures.
IPS assigned a safety manager to remain onsite throughout the project. The safety manager gave daily toolbox talks with specific procedures relative to the work occurring that day. IPS completed the project on time, with zero safety incidents.
